What should I ask about a degree?

Here's what to ask when making enquiries, whether that's at an Open Day, on Unibuddy or over email.

Starting a degree isn't just about choosing the right course, it may also mean moving to a new city and finding a new home for the next year or three.

Here’s our guide of what to ask – beyond, “will you take me with X UCAS points or X years of industry experience?” So you don’t leave the conversation with an offer, but no real idea:

If you’re straight out of sixth form/college:

1. How many hours/days will I be in?
2. What are the student to teacher ratios like?
3. Have you taught students like me before? – this one’s especially good if you have extra needs
4. Is there mental health support available?
5. Are there any bursaries I can access if things get a bit tough financially?
6. What practicals will I be doing to get me ready for industry?
7. How do you work with industry?
8. Do tutors have links with people in industry to help us network?

If you’re coming back to education as a mature student:

1. Can I gain entry based on my industry experience?
2. How many hours/days will I be in?
3. What are the student to teacher ratios like?
4. Can I study part-time?
5. What if my circumstances change and I can’t keep going next year?
6. Will I be able to complete a placement or gain any industry experience?
7. Do other students work as well as study?
8. Will my employer see the benefits of me studying?
9. I’ve not studied in a while, will anyone help me with the transition?
10. Have you taught students like me before?
11. Is there mental health support available?
12. Are there any bursaries I can access if things get a bit tough financially?
13. Can I complete some of the course virtually for flexibility?
14. What practicals will I be doing to get me ready for industry?
15. How do you work with industry?
16. Do tutors have links with people in industry to help us network?
