Equality & Diversity

Here at UCEN Manchester, we take serious pride in the incredible diversity that defines both our institution and our home city.
One of our major priorities as an educational provider is to cultivate a learning environment that’s free from discrimination, bullying, harassment, or victimisation, because we firmly believe that all members of our community deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
Over the years, we’ve built a culture where everyone has a fair shot, and where differences are celebrated, not just tolerated. Each person brings something unique to our community, and we value every single one of our staff, students, partners, and alumni for their personal contributions and individuality.
Our commitments
As you might guess, we’re firm believers in having a varied and inclusive community that enhances our surroundings and bolsters our shared experiences.
This is the reason we’ve put in a lot of effort to cultivate a lively environment where all individuals are appreciated and respected - and we won't settle for anything less than that!
Here’s how we bring our commitments to life:
Transparent & fair policies
Transparency and fairness provide the foundation for every supportive community. By promoting transparent and responsible decision-making, we’ve created a fantastic atmosphere, where every opinion is valued and all individuals are treated with respect.
Our resource on How We Make Decisions details our dedication to transparency in our decision-making processes, while our Student Representation system ensures that student opinions are heard in our policies and practices.
Celebrating diverse communities
Our campuses thrive on the rich backgrounds and experiences of our members. We love celebrating events like Pride and supporting initiatives like the Red Box Project, which tackles period poverty.
We also make sure to acknowledge significant dates like International Women's Day and Black History Month, and we take pride in highlighting accomplishments and amplifying student voices, such as through our Black History Month Student Spotlight.
Our efforts to create an outstanding educational environment have earned us several national award nominations, which we’re incredibly proud of!
Raising awareness and ensuring accessibility
We don’t compromise when it comes to raising awareness about important social issues like hate crime, for example, through our Leading the Way on Hate Crime Awareness initiative.
We also offer specialised support for students with additional accessibility or support needs through our Disability Support services and offer guidance and support during Ramadan to ensure that all our Muslim community members can fully participate in their traditions.
Engaging and supporting our communities
But our commitment to equality doesn’t just end at our campus! We actively support the broader community; from hosting events like the Sparkle Weekend 2021 to our In This Together support initiative.
Our interest lies in establishing lasting connections and making a positive impact that goes way beyond our college doors.
Join our community and make a difference
Diversity, inclusion, and community are crucial to the daily work carried out at UCEN Manchester. We’re extremely proud and excited about the lively community we’ve built, and we’d love to have you become a part of it.
