Clearing FAQs

advice for careers advisors and tutors

At UCEN Manchester we've gathered a list of frequently asked questions to help you fully understand how the Clearing process works.

If you want additional information, we also have detailed advice on how clearing works and some useful top tips for clearing.

Clearing is a process managed by UCAS to help students find a higher education course to study in September.

You can use clearing if you haven’t yet applied to study, if you are not holding any offers at a University or College or if your exams haven’t gone as planned and you haven’t secured a place you were holding.

It's available July to October each year.

If you already have your exam results but you have no offers, you can use Clearing from July.

If you had conditional offers but your exam results didn't go to plan, you can use Clearing from results day, when Clearing vacancies will be listed in UCAS search tool.

All Clearing vacancies are listed in on UCAS search tool from July. You can check UCAS here. You can contact UCEN Manchester on 0161 674 7777 to discuss the courses we offer.

You need to contact us by calling 0161 674 7777 and we will be happy to discuss our courses and entry requirements. If you meet our conditions then you will be given a verbal offer.

You can then log onto UCAS, go to the ‘Your choices’ section of Track and click 'Add Clearing choice’, then enter the details of the course.

You don’t need to reply to a Clearing offer. Once you add the choice, we will confirm your choice.

If you change your mind and no longer want to go to your firm choice, you can release yourself into Clearing – once you do this, your Track status will be updated and you’ll receive an email to say something has changed. You'll then be able to search and apply for courses in Clearing.

If you’re eligible for Clearing, your Clearing number will be on the welcome page and ‘Your choices’ section of Track.

There could be a few reasons Track hasn’t been updated.

We may still be waiting for your results, if you have received confirmation please send us a copy to UCEN Admissions. If you’ve met the conditions of your offer, your place will be confirmed soon.

Track is unavailable at some times during the exam results period; please check UCAS for these times.

We do not consider an application on the same course unless the information you provided at the time has changed. You can always apply for a different course and we will consider your application.

No, you can’t swap your firm and insurance choices.

If you now want to go to your insurance choice, you need to go through Clearing. You need to check with your insurance choice institution that they can accept you in Clearing.
