What is Access to Higher Education?

An Access to Higher Education Diploma is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification for adult learners. The diploma is designed for learners who are returning to education with the intention of studying at university but may not have the necessary entry requirements.
An Access to Higher Education Diploma is the equivalent of three A Levels and is available across various subject areas, including business, engineering, nursing, and health science.

How long does it take to complete an Access to Higher Education Diploma?

  • Nursing and Midwifery: Prepare for a health-related career like nursing and midwifery by studying biology, psychology, and sociology modules.
  • Computing and Digital Technology: Complete modules in computing and maths to get started on a path to a career in digital technology.
  • Engineering: Embark on a journey to becoming a skilled engineer by studying math and physics, including differentiation, AC waveforms, electromagnetic induction and applied electronics.
  • Combined & Medical Science: Complete biology, chemistry, and physics modules to pursue a career in the life sciences or medical science professions such as optometry, biomedical science, or neuroscience.

What are the entry requirements for an Access to Higher Education course?

To study most Access to Higher Education courses at UCEN Manchester, you need to have achieved:

  • GCSE in English at grade C/4 or above, and a maths GCSE at grade C/4 or above.  
  • We will also accept IELTS at 6.5 or above with no aspect under 6.0 instead of GCSE English.

Is an Access to Higher Education Diploma a good pathway?

Access to Higher Education courses successfully prepare graduates for university. Students who entered university with an Access to Higher Education qualification and those who gained entry with other Level 3 qualifications are almost equally likely to achieve a first-class degree.
