How to secure finance for your January start

Everything you need to know about applying for Student Finance.

So, you’ve found your dream course at UCEN Manchester and began the application process. Now it’s time to sort out your student finance.

You don’t need a confirmed place to apply so it’s best to start your application immediately, as it can take up to six weeks to be processed. You can apply for finance up to nine months after the start date of your course, however, if your funding advice has not been received by the time you are due to enrol, you will be required to complete a direct debit mandate at enrolment.

Before you apply for your student loan, check out our blog on how student finance really works and watch our explainer video.

How much can I receive?

Depending on your circumstances, there are a range of financial options available to you. On top of your tuition fee and maintenance loan, you could receive extra financial support if you:

  • are under 25, have no contact with your parents and support yourself
  • pay for childcare
  • are a full-time student with children
  • have an adult who depends on you financially
  • have a disability, mental or physical health problem, or learning difficulty.

Use this handy Student Finance Calculator to find out which loans and grants you could be eligible for.

Student Finance England

To kick off your application, your first port of call will be the Student Finance England (SFE) website, where you’ll need to create an account if you haven’t done so already. You’ll also need the details of your household income.

Throughout the process, be sure to keep your application up to date if your circumstances change; for example, if you choose a different course or change your address.

If you can’t apply online or need assistance, you can download the student finance forms, or call SFE on 0300 100 0607. Our Careers & Welfare service can also help you with your application. They can be contacted by email on Careers&Welfare@ucenmanchester.ac.uk
