Carl has worked within the beauty and fashion photographic industry for over 25 years, working with national and international advertising agencies and publishers.
After graduating with a Distinction and Professional Qualifying Examination in Photography, he completed a Masters in Arts’ (Photography) from Bolton University followed by a teacher training qualification and graduated with a PGCE from Huddersfield University.
Carl has been a Senior Lecturer within the Make-Up Artistry and Special Effects department at UCEN Manchester for six years while also retaining links to industry by working freelance with both national and international clients, most recently with Very / ISME.
His teaching passions include developing student’s versatility, diversity in craft skills, visual literacy and art direction, enabling students to collaborate with a wide and high-profile range of professionals.
Carl has gained numerous industry accolades including:
- Shot up North Awards from 2001 - 2019
- The Association of Photographers Open Awards
- The International Digital Imaging Awards
- The UK National Business Calendar Awards.
In 2005, Carl published a documentary art book entitled ‘He Ain’t Heavy!’ which explored the issue of destigmatising mental health and the role of the family. His artwork was also selected for the Prestigious ‘Manchester Open’ exhibited at HOME in 2020 which attracted over 20,000 viewers during the shows first four weeks of the 10 week run. His work is also regularly published within world-wide beauty and fashion magazines.
Anna-May has 11 years’ experience within the industry including bridal, print, tv, red-carpet events and theatre. She is a tutor on the FdA Make-Up Artistry and Special Effects Make-Up Artistry and holds a 1st class BA (hons) Make-Up Artistry and teaching qualification. Anna-May runs a successful bridal business supporting her in providing relevant knowledge to students about starting their own business.
Victoria has over 6 years of teaching experience within Make-Up Artistry and Special Effects Make-Up Artistry, gaining distinctions in her FdA in Media Make-Up and teaching qualification.
Victoria has worked for high profile brands such as Dior and Mac Cosmetics and has experience in film, editorial, and catwalk industries. Victoria enjoys supporting students with honing their artistic flair and developing industry-specific skills throughout their journey with UCEN Manchester.
Lindsey’s experience within the industry covers many sectors including television, film, theatre, corporate projects, print, and the bridal sector. She has lectured on the Foundation Degree and BA (Hons) in Make-Up Artistry and Special Effects Make-Up artistry for over 10 years.
Her original passion lies within makeup for television and film; however, more recently she has enjoyed supporting students within their academic studies. She believes that providing students with the support to develop their research skills and critical thought is equally as rewarding as supporting them practically, as it enables the students to contextualise their studies.
Lindsey is qualified to level six in Make -Up Artistry, Social Policy, and teaching.
Gary Long is a photography tutor and media technician across both BA and foundation degree courses. He received a first-class honours degree in Media, Writing and Production from the University of Bolton in 2012 and has worked in both online marketing and education ever since.
His skills and experience include photography, photo editing/retouching, digital design, motion graphics, non-linear video editing, sound design, and corporate video production. He works with students to help them develop showreels and learn how
to promote their work.
Gary has also recently completed his PGCE qualification from The University of Huddersfield and is currently undertaking a master’s degree in Screenwriting at The University of Manchester.
Lexi Reeves has achieved a level 6 achieving a first-class in BDes (Hons) Special Effect Development.
She has 8 years’ experience within the education sector, in addition to working within the makeup and special effect makeup industry.
Lexi has completed a Postgraduate qualification in Contemporary Arts Practice at the University of Salford.
Hollie holds a First Class BA Honours in Special Effects Make-Up Artistry which she completed right here at UCEN Manchester! She later went on to complete her PGCE qualification at the University of Huddersfield and has been teaching with us since 2017.
Prior to completing her degree in Special Effects Make-Up, Hollie undertook a range of qualifications in Fine Art, Photography and Media enabling her to teach across a range of modules on our FdA programme.
Hollies' passion for make-up lies within both make-up for TV/Film as well as creative make-up which embodies Avant-Garde and art based themes. Previous industry experience includes work within the television industry and assisting on jobs for both the BBC and Sky Playhouse, as well as local theatre work and freelance artistry.
