How guest lectures can further develop a student’s knowledge

Professor Guest Lecturer

Criminology and Criminal Justice students at UCEN Manchester were recently treated to a guest lecture from a high-profile professional in the sector.

Professor Robert Ralphs has over 15 years experience of research and lecturing in the areas of substance misuse, youth crime, violent crime, gangs, criminal justice policy and criminological theory.

Robert’s involvement in gang related work extends beyond his academic life and he is a Trustee of the charity Mothers Against Violence who work to reduce gang membership and related violent crime.

This experience and insight meant he had a lot to offer our students as they near the end of the course and look to start their careers in the sector.

Laura Roberts, one of the students who attended the lecture, said: “It was an amazing opportunity to have interacted with someone with such knowledge and background in and around the drugs world. This was a really good and helpful guest speaker for students, especially in the criminology field.”

Anna Archer, another student, added: “He got everyone involved and made the talk interesting. I learnt so many things that I genuinely didn't know before.”

Speaking about the visit, Louise Kay, Lecturer in Criminology and Criminal Justice, highlighted the extra knowledge and insights that the students gained, commenting: “ We feel extremely fortunate that Rob Ralphs, Professor of Criminology and Social Policy at Manchester Metropolitan University, and a world-leading academic in the area of substance misuse and drugs policy, took the time to visit UCEN Manchester to share his current research into the emerging drug trends in the Greater Manchester area.”

Louise added: “What is also special about Rob, is that he is an alumni of The Manchester College, and is a shining example to all students where your academic journey can take you."
