Summer wellbeing tips: Rest, recharge and reset

Summer is finally here, and whether you’re off on an adventure, working a summer job, or just enjoying a much-needed break from studying, it’s the perfect opportunity to hit pause, focus on your wellbeing, and reset ahead of the new academic year.

To support you through this process, the Future U Student Support team at UCEN Manchester has pulled together some top tips that offer a great starting point for anyone wanting to make the most of the summer break:

The health triad

Sleep, diet, and exercise form the foundation of physical and mental wellness, and the summer is a great time for you to focus on these ‘three pillars of health’ while taking a break from studying - you may also change some unwanted habits along the way.

When our nutritional, movement, and sleep needs are fully met, our energy levels, mood, cognitive performance, and immune function can operate at full capacity. It’s possible that you’ll notice your anxiety levels reduce as well.

However, maintaining healthy behaviours, such as sleep tracking, nutrition plans, and exercise routines, requires a level of motivation, commitment and discipline, but think of it as you prioritising yourself so you can return to your students after the summer with renewed vigour.

Rest is productive (seriously!)

You’ve worked hard, you deserve a break! Resting doesn’t mean that you’re lazy, it’s essential. Take time to sleep in, read for fun, or just do nothing without guilt. It’s your summer, and giving yourself space to recharge will help you feel refreshed for whatever’s next.

Connect with others (or yourself)

Summer is the perfect time to reconnect with people who make you feel good. Catch up with friends, family, or join a local group that come together to do something that you love. Don’t forget, it’s also okay to spend time alone and focus on your own passions.

Take a digital detox (even just for a bit)

Unplugging from your devices, even for a short while, can work wonders for your mood and mental clarity. Try taking a break from social media, limit doom-scrolling, or swap screen time for outdoor time.
