“Shoot Your Shot”: UCEN Manchester student shares inspiring RTS bursary experience

After spending two weeks in London as part of the prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) bursary scheme, a 3D Game Art and VFX student is now looking forward to excelling during the third year of their course at UCEN Manchester.

Zeno Petrou, who was chosen under the highly competitive ‘Digital Innovation’ category, joined fellow scholars for an action-packed schedule of studio visits, industry talks, and networking events.

Speaking about the experience, Zeno said:

“It was intimidating at first, but everyone at RTS - even the CFOs and CEOs - were really welcoming and down to earth. We’d sit down for chats about projects, work opportunities, and even just random things. It felt like everyone was down to earth and on the same level.”

During the fortnight, Zeno visited some of the UK’s most recognised studios and creative spaces, including Apple’s new office in Battersea Power Station, Good Morning Britain and Lorraine at the BBC, and Paramount.

One standout moment was recording and editing clips for Milkshake! - Channel 5’s popular children’s show.

“It was a brilliant hands-on experience, from teamwork to editing, it gave me a real taste of the industry” Zeno explained.

The bursary also created opportunities to connect with like-minded students and graduates across a wide range of disciplines.

“I had eye-opening conversations with other scholars, from those studying broadcasting to cybersecurity. One even encouraged me to look at coding in C++ and JavaScript, which could open new creative directions for me” Zeno added.

The 3D Game Art and VFX student also praised the RTS organisers, describing them as “really hands-on and supportive” throughout the programme.

As he enters his third year at UCEN Manchester, Zeno plans to apply what he has learned to both his coursework and future career plans.

He also encouraged other students to consider applying for the bursary:

“I’d 100% recommend it. Shoot your shot- as there is nothing ventured, nothing gained. Even if you think your portfolio isn’t perfect, you might bring something unique to the table. Be authentic and just go for it.”
