Getting ready for your new home

Are you planning on living in private rented accommodation during the 2024/25 academic year? If you are, UCEN Manchester’s accredited accommodation partners, Manchester Student Homes (MSH), has pulled together some helpful information, advice and guidance for students, which we’ve summarised and recommend you read before embarking on the next stage of your higher education journey.

Check your deposit is protected

Your deposit should be protected in an authorised scheme, and you should have been provided with the prescribed information within 30 days of handing over your money. Check out the guidance from MSH to find out more.

Inventories

It’s really important to take an inventory when you move in. Photographs and videos are always useful as well.

There is guidance available on how to check and agree an inventory. MSH has also created a short video on the topic.

Meter readings and payments

Take meter readings and give them to the utility suppliers - taking a photograph for future reference is always good. Some suppliers may charge late payment fees and any debts could affect your credit score.

Setting up utility bills

You will need to change the name(s) on your utility bills as soon as you move in - the start date is usually the date on your tenancy agreement, but this may vary depending on the terms. If in doubt, you can contact MSH.

Appliances

Clear instructions about how to use any appliance should be available; you should not have to guess!

Registering with a GP

Register with a local GP and dental practice straight away - you can find one on the NHS website.

Don’t forget to register to vote! It’s really easy and simple and can be done online.

Insurance

Buy contents insurance for your valuables to ensure you’re covered should the worst happen.

Be a Good Neighbour

Please remember that you are part of a wider community, and it is important to show consideration for your neighbours whose lifestyles are likely to be different from yours, such as young families and older residents.

If you are experiencing noise nuisance, you can contact Manchester City Council’s Licensing and Out Of Hours team. When the noise is ongoing, call 0161 234 5004. Stay on the line and you will get through to an officer who will take your details. Officers work most days until 4:30am and can attend to professionally witness the disturbance.

MSH can also advise on off campus student housing issues. You can contact them via one of the methods below:
