5 Reasons to Choose an Access Course Over a Foundation Year

Thinking about going back into education? Not sure which route is right for you?

If you are an adult learner looking to reskill or progress into higher level study, two options probably keep coming up: access courses and foundation years. Both can get you where you want to go. But they are not the same thing, and for many adult learners, an Access to Higher Education course is the stronger choice.

Here is why.

What is an Access to Higher Education course?

An Access to Higher Education (Access to HE) course is a programme designed for adult learners who want to study at degree level but do not yet hold the qualifications needed for direct entry. Some students have no A Levels at all. Others have qualifications that do not quite match the subject they want to pursue. Either way, an Access to HE course provides a clear, recognised route forward.

On completion, students receive a qualification equivalent to three A Levels. It is accepted by universities and higher education providers across the UK, and it opens the door to a wide range of degree-level programmes. Not sure how qualifications are graded? Check out our levels explained page.

Research shows that Access to HE students perform strongly once they progress. Around 25% of Access to HE Diploma students go on to achieve a first-class degree. That figure is almost identical to the 26% of students entering with other Level 3 qualifications. The evidence is clear: an Access to HE course prepares you just as well as more traditional routes.

So, should you choose an Access course or a Foundation Year? Here are five reasons the Access route stands out.

Reason 1: lower cost

Costs, fees and options for finance are real considerations for adult learners, and this is where Access to HE courses have a clear advantage.

Foundation year fees vary depending on the subject. For classroom-based subjects such as business, humanities and social sciences, fees are now capped at £5,760 per year. For lab-based or technical subjects, they can reach up to £9,535. Either way, Access to HE courses generally cost significantly less, with fees typically ranging from around £3,000 to £5,000 depending on the provider and subject.

However, one of the benefits of Access to HE courses is that they generally cost between £3,000 and £5,000, meaning you could pay significantly less than the cost of a foundation year.

If you are aged 19 or over, there are some helpful options to help you fund your course or even eliminate some of the costs. An Advanced Learner Loan means nothing to pay upfront, with repayments only starting once you are earning over a set threshold. And if you go on to complete a qualifying degree-level course, the loan for your Access to HE Diploma is written off entirely.

From bursaries to grants, there are options that can reduce the financial pressure further. Our student support team can talk you through everything available to you when you enquire.

Reason 2: a strong peer support system

One of the things that surprises adult learners most when they start an Access to HE course is the strength of the community around them.

Our Access to HE courses are designed to support adult students back to study, to support their progression into higher education, and to help them secure the career of their dreams.

You will be studying alongside mature students from a range of backgrounds, each with their own unique story and journey. Having made the decision to return to education, you will all be starting off with the same goal and be perfectly placed to help each other along the way.

That shared motivation creates a genuinely supportive atmosphere. You will find that your fellow students are as invested in your progress as their own. Everyone is working toward the same goal, and that energy makes a real difference, particularly in the earlier weeks when everything feels new. At UCEN Manchester, our Access to HE courses are specifically designed to help you build momentum and prepare you to progress with confidence.

Reason 3: building skills and confidence

For many adult learners, it is not just qualifications that need refreshing. It is study skills and confidence too. An Access to HE course is designed with that in mind.

You will benefit from a supportive learning environment which can be a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, group work, practical workshops, presentations, debates and private study. This closely resembles the learning experienced by students at higher education level, so you will be fully prepared for your degree by the time you finish your access course.

In contrast to foundation years, Access to HE courses help learners build their confidence in a college-like environment, before taking the big leap into higher education. This is perfect for those adult learners returning to education after a while out.

For anyone returning to study after a long gap, that transition period is invaluable. You get the time and space to find your feet, develop your academic voice and arrive at higher level study ready to perform. We also offer a free study skills programme to support you throughout.

Reason 4: tailored programmes with flexible choices

Foundation years are usually tailored to a specific university course, which can be useful, but can also limit your options for progression.

Although access courses can be tailored to specific programmes to ensure the best learning outcomes, they are measured based on UCAS points, meaning you can leave your options open and benefit from flexibility when it comes to choosing your course. This is perfect if you do not know the exact route you want to take, or if you discover a new area of interest during your studies.

For example, by enrolling onto UCEN Manchester's Access to HE Business course, you could then go on to study a whole host of related degree courses such as accounting, marketing or economics. The course equips you with transferable skills and relevant subject knowledge, while keeping your future options wide open. Browse our Access to HE courses to see what is available.

Reason 5: extra support and guidance

Returning to education as an adult comes with its own set of questions and challenges. The right support can make the difference between a smooth transition and a stressful one.

As well as the extra financial support available to mature students, our Student Support Service will provide expert guidance whenever you need it. All of the advisors on our Careers and Welfare team are highly-qualified professionals who can help you on the path to your dream career.

Beyond academic and career support, we also offer practical guidance on funding, wellbeing and any personal circumstances that might affect your studies. Every student has access to one-to-one support when they need it, and smaller class sizes mean your tutors will get to know you as an individual.

That personal approach is central to how we work. You are a person with a goal, not a number on a register.

Why 2026/2027 is a great time to start

Whether you are looking to enter healthcare, education, business, the creative industries or any number of other fields, there is an Access to HE pathway designed to get you there.
