About Us

Our Commitment to Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom

At UCEN Manchester, we believe that freedom of speech and academic freedom are essential to high-quality teaching, learning, and the wider student experience.

These freedoms allow our staff and students to explore different perspectives, challenge assumptions, and engage critically with ideas that shape society and our understanding of the world.

As an HE provider, we have legal and regulatory responsibilities to uphold and promote freedom of speech and academic freedom within the law. We are fully committed to creating an inclusive learning environment where diverse opinions can be expressed and debated respectfully; even when those views may be uncomfortable, challenging, or controversial.

Students and staff should expect, through their studies and wider engagement in our community, to encounter ideas that stretch their thinking. This is a natural and important part of higher education, preparing students for life beyond UCEN Manchester in a complex, diverse society.

However, our commitment to free and open dialogue does not extend to behaviour that is prohibited by law including abuse, bullying, discrimination, harassment, intimidation, hatred, or violence. We are clear that freedom of speech comes with responsibilities to others in our community.

We also uphold academic freedom within the law. This means that academic staff have the right to explore and share new ideas, including those that may be unpopular or challenge established thinking, without fear of negative consequences to their employment or career progression.

This sits alongside our strong focus on academic integrity and quality. Not all ideas are equally valid or evidence-based, and we support our teaching teams in applying appropriate academic rigour to ensure students engage with ideas that are credible, relevant, and enriching. Through well-designed curricula, critical thinking, and peer review, we maintain high academic standards and help our students develop the skills to evaluate ideas independently and responsibly.
