Top tips to guide you through clearing

UCEN Manchester Students' Union representatives

Clearing can be the perfect opportunity to get you into uni and study higher education. In 2022, a total of 33,280 university students used clearing to get into university.

However, clearing day can be stressful, as you may not get your desired exam results, or have been rejected by your firm and insurance choices. We want to make sure you are well equipped and prepared for the day to boost your chances of securing a place at a university course that you want.

Before you contact the university on the day, check out our university clearing guide to make the most of your time and get ready to cruise through clearing when it opens.

1. Research the course and university

Look for the course and the subject area that’s going to motivate you, as well as an environment you can thrive and succeed in. You can take a look at the courses we offer and find out how to get in touch on our clearing page. Add a clearing choice that you want to your personal list.

2. Be prepared before the day of clearing

Make a list of possible courses you’re interested in. As soon as the lines open, call us on our dedicated clearing number 0161 674 7777. You can find out about the course/s you are interested in by filling out an enquiry form and a member of our team will be in touch to provide more information.

3. Be positive

Be positive and don’t panic. A lot of people don’t end up with their first choice but end up loving their second or third choice. We’re here to help ensure you’re happy with your course and will provide the support you need to make the right choice.

4. Remain calm

We understand that the day can be stressful, but it is important to be calm and collected. Write down key points beforehand so you have an idea of what you might want to ask when speaking to the clearing team.

5. Sell yourself through your academic and personal achievements

Ensure you highlight why you are passionate about joining the course – what is your motivation? Be ready to talk about why you love the subject.

Make sure to discuss your personal and academic achievements, your career goals and anything else that you think a university will want to hear.

6. Don't make snap decisions

You don’t need to rush into accepting the first course place your chosen university offers. If you need time to think before committing, ask for a deadline when your decision needs to be made by. If you are calling the university on A Level results day then make sure you take your time to think things through.
