I’m Michael. I am originally from Manchester and was raised and educated here. I was inspired by my own teachers to pursue a career in education. However, before following that path I felt a strong pull towards gaining hands-on experience and exploring the world.
Before transitioning into teaching, I spent several years in the hospitality industry gaining valuable operational, marketing, administration, and financial management experience. My career took me to Sheraton Hotels, the Queen Elizabeth 2 ship, Haydock Park racecourse, Dominion Hotel, Stanley Leisure Group, and Britannia Hotels. Aboard the QE2, I had the opportunity to travel and immerse myself in diverse cultures—an experience that remains one of the most memorable and inspiring parts of my life.
Eventually, my ambition to teach brought me back to education where I was ready to use my years of professional experience to help equip people with the skills they’d need to forge their own career. Over the past 30 years, I’ve designed and delivered a wide range of courses in tourism, business, and management at Levels 3 to 6. I’ve also prepared students for professional qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Institute of Leadership and Management, and the Chartered Management Institute.
My teaching philosophy centres on three key values: building trust and setting high expectations with students; delivering engaging and interactive lessons; and emphasising professionalism in attitudes, behaviours and skills. These values are rooted in my own background and my commitment to student success.
The moments I cherish most are seeing my students excel academically and progress into prestigious professional careers.
Beyond work, I enjoy cricket, swimming, playing the guitar, cooking, and cheering for Manchester City.

Research and Publications
My research interests are focused on my current teaching subjects in any given year. However, the global challenges in international economics, society, culture, and politics; and their impacts on business and societies particularly interest me.
An ongoing project of mine is exploring alternative methods of assessment involving knowledge, behaviours, and skills within modules to replace the more traditional methods of essays and reports and how this can be embedded in new future curriculum development.
