Want to get ahead in the creative industries? Then join us on the fast paced, cutting-edge, industry focused Graphic Design and Advertising industry course @ UCEN Manchester.
You will work closely with a variety of industry practitioners and specialist tutors supported by ex-students who return yearly to share their experiences, achievements and up-to-date practices in digital and traditional based media.
Studying in Manchester offers an array of exciting opportunities and strong industry links with Ahoy, AmazeRealise and Studio North, our in-house alumni event and the annual visit to 4Designers London, ensures our students have their fingers on the pulse of the design world.
In our fully equipped studio, you will be encouraged to push your creative boundaries and to experiment with an array of materials and making processes to develop original concept-driven solutions. Assignments will focus on real world problems through a series of competitions, client and industry set briefs often concluding in pitching and feedback sessions from industry.
The art of visual communication is underpinned by design theory and commercial marketing know-how to take your work to the next level and enrich your personal portfolio. Witness your confidence grow as you master specialist industry software, learn how to pitch ideas, compete in national competitions, manage clients and present your work in the final year showcase. Alex Komlosy has been in the design industry for 25 years, working with SME’s, blue chip & public sector clients such as National Express, Manchester Council and The Home Office with experience in a range of roles from art-working through to creative directing and client facing.
Teaching passions include developing students’ visual proficiency, bringing current thinking on how to create and communicate commercial design and advertising solutions and running application workshops.
Practicing freelance graphic designer with 20 years’ experience working at a variety of small to larger design agencies with clients such as M&S, CocaCola, Tesco, Powergen, FHP City Living, Metropolitan Housing Trust, Budweiser, Commerzbank and Sanctuary records. Paolo currently runs specialist services in Design, Live illustration Recording & Spatial Graphics.
A multi skilled creative with a passion for design and moving image and an eye for detail. Never happier then when unlocking the creative potential of the students in front of me.
During my ten years as a tutor in the creative media department at The Manchester College/UCEN I have worked across a variety of courses such as Graphic Design, Animation, Film and TV and New Media, teaching fundamental design skills, contextual studies and importantly assisting learners as they bridge the gap between academic and vocational practice.
Ideas Generation, visual communication, mark-making, character design and storytelling are pivotal to my teaching practice ensuring I develop material that keeps my learners engaged, challenged and on point as they begin to make creative waves in the world of design and motion graphics.

• GCSE English Language and Mathematics A* to C or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded

What will I be studying?
Year 1: Advertising (30 credits)
Learn the differences between designing and advertising, deconstructing a product/service, presenting its benefits in a persuasive manner, and creating engaging and persuasive scamps and copywriting – all before any work on aesthetics even begins!
Year 1: Branding (30 credits)
With industry input, pitches and feedback this unit Identify the key features that drive an identity and how they are represented across print and screen media… Think beyond the logo.
Year 1: Professional and Academic Development (30 credits)
Learn to solve problems through the power of research. Focus on developing and re-enforcing your critical, analytical, academic and linguistic skills, as you prepare and plan for both graduate level study and a future professional care
Year 1: Visual Literacy (30 credits)
Explore the design principles and skills that provide the structure around graphic design, focusing on design process, content differentiation, layout fundamentals and the anatomy of typography, exploring the relationship between them. design process, content differentiation, layout fundamentals and the anatomy of typography, exploring the relationship between them.
Year 2: Industry Practice (30 credits)
Gain up-to-date skills and principles in the digital Industry through client set realistic briefs focusing on digital design and advertising with specialist application skills, studio visits, workshops and industry pitches with feedback.
Year 2: Practice Based Research Project (30 credits)
The mentor programme on this unit puts students in charge of their studies through facilitating placements, job opportunities, portfolio crits, live briefs and more. The unit aims to provide students with the opportunity to further explore discipline-specific knowledge and undertake a research project in a self-selected area of professional practice.
Year 2: Self Directed Project (30 credits)
In preparation for the final Top-up year or industry work this unit enables students to develop their own interests and direction through writing or finding a suitable creative brief. Students are supported in framing and planning this significant project so that they can manage it autonomously. Work will be ‘shown’ at the end of year show, planned, branding, promoted, marketed and hosted by the students themselves.
Year 2: Specialist Practice (30 credits)
Find individual direction and purpose within the design and advertising industry though exploration of personal interests and specialist disciplines through multiple outward facing briefs with broad creative opportunities.

What are the careers that this will lead to?
The Graphic Design & Advertising course will prepare you for many junior and starter roles within the industries such as, junior designer or art-director/copywriter, digital designer, artworker, placement roles. Graduates will have developed a wide variety of communication skills to prepare them for positions within design studios, advertising agencies, branding companies, TV, film and freelance enterprises. Alumni now work in top creative studios such as AmazeRealise, Ahoy, Studio North, W12 Studios, Degree 53, BooHoo, McCann, BDP.
